Côtes de Castillon

gasparde1.jpgGeographical Location : Located on the upper slopes of the Côtes de Castillon appelation area, alongside the RD 17 Road, the vineyards of Château La Gasparde spread undivided over 18 hectares of the commune of Gardegan et Tourtirac There is an exceptional view from the Château, looking out over the hillocks of the Dordogne, where the Château of Michel de Montaigne can be seen.

Nature of the Ground : Chalky-clay soils, unsympathetic to agriculture due to th epresence of large stone boulders, and its fossil-rich sub-soil so beneficial to vine growth, is a classic example of the geology of which Professor Henri ENJALBERT was so fond. This twin of this terroir can be found to the west, further along these same slopes at the same altitude amongst the estates of the Saint Emilion Grands Crus Classés.

Grapes : 85 % Merlot for the roundness, 12 % Cabernet Franc for the elegance, 3 % Cabernet Sauvignon for the frame.

The Past : It is said that La Gasparde is the nickname once given to a young and pretty widow who owned this Château in the past, and who was assiduously courted throughout her life by her neighbour Baron Gaspard de T... The origins of the Château date back to 1776, an area during which the domain belonged to Château la Perrière. The new tasting room boasts a fresco painting depicting the battle of Castillon, which was to bring an end to the hundred Years War, hailing the return of the Aquitaine region to the soverignty of the Kingdom of France, and possesses an exhibition of tools used for carfting vine and wine.
